Fondway Cafe is conveniently located right behind Metrotown Skytrain Station in Burnaby. The moment you step inside the cafe, there’s a bit of a hipster/vintage feel to it which gives this place a nice and relaxing atmosphere. This place can only accommodate a maximum occupancy of 30 people so seating is definitely limited here. They have a huge communal table at the back and a few small tables scattered throughout the place.
The first time I visited this place was with my boyfriend and we ordered two cakes and two drinks between the two of us to share. I had the milk tea with grass jelly ($4.95+$0.50 with tea) and matcha cake while my boyfriend had the café mocha ($3.95) and black sesame cake. I can’t quite remember the price of the cakes but in total we spent $19.80. I really enjoyed my milk tea with grass jelly as it had a strong tea flavour and complimented the grass jelly really well. I tried a sip of my boyfriend’s café mocha and I found it quite enjoyable! On the other hand, the cakes were a bit disappointing. I was really looking forward to the matcha cake since I’m a huge fan of matcha in general, but sadly it was a bit dry and the matcha taste was quite subtle. The black sesame cake had lots of peanuts inside which overpowered the cake and made the texture of the cake odd to eat. It seems like their cakes lack consistency perhaps they’re still tweaking their cakes.
On my second visit here, I decided to just go with their milk tea with grass jelly as the food options for a Thursday evening was extremely limited. This time around, the milk tea was a little too sweet for my liking compared to my first visit, but still quite enjoyable. I don’t plan on revisiting this place soon, but I would definitely recommend their café mocha and milk tea with grass jelly. Skip the food and dessert here.
