Belgard Kitchen is a restaurant situated in Railtown a few doors down from the popular Ask for Luigi in the Settlement Building . Every week, Belgard Kitchen hosts an Instagram contest and in order to win, you have to suggest a tasty dish according to the simple ingredients they challenge you to come up with. About a few months ago, I won one of their contests so I was lucky enough to come in for a complimentary lunch. The dish I suggested was smashed avocado on toast with strawberry basil vinaigrette and almond crusted goat cheese. The catch is, the winner has to come in on Wednesday during lunch in order to claim the complimentary lunch as it’s for their Wednesday ‘fresh sheet’.
The restaurant was slightly difficult and confusing to find as there was no signage or anything outside the Settlement Building indicating that it’s the entrance for the restaurant. I was a bit disappointed with the outcome of the dish I had suggested because it just tasted like avocado on toast topped with goat cheese, slivered almonds, and strawberry jam. I was initially looking forward to this dish as I thought the kitchen would go accordingly to the suggestion and have almond crusted goat cheese and/or strawberry vinaigrette drizzle , but it seemed as if they didn’t bother going the extra mile with this dish in particular since it was tweaked a lot. I mean, I could have totally made this myself and if it weren’t for the free meal, I don’t think I would have paid $12 for it. They do offer their regular avocado on toast for brunch on weekends if you’re interested. If you do decide to check this place out, I would suggest the ‘Tomato Soup Fondue with Grilled Cheese Toasties’ (only available during dinner service).
