Kyo Korean BBQ & Sushi House

Price: Lunch AYCE: $18.95/Dinner AYCE: $28.95

Kyo is a great casual place for large parties that love quantity over quality. I’m usually the type who avoids AYCE establishments at all costs because I tend to overeat beyond the point of fullness trying to get my money’s worth (talk about risk of getting a stomach rupture!). Once or twice a year I don’t mind coming back to Kyo for dinner since they have a pretty extensive menu featuring Korean BBQ and unlimited sashimi. I made the trip here with my boyfriend on a Wednesday evening for his friend’s birthday. A few days before the dinner, I kept bugging him if his friend made reservations because I did not want to wait for a table, especially if it’s going to be party of 10 ( 😛 )! Parking can be tight along Granville Street but there is free underground parking available right below the building.

Like any other regular AYCE place, you order off a sheet of paper ranging from appetizers, deep fried, sushi, tempura, etc. Be careful of how many pieces there are per item when you order as they range in quantity!

Started off with some miso soup, goma-ae, and sunomono. After the first few sips of my soup, I knew the food tonight would just be mediocre at best. For the goma-ae, the spinach was way overcooked and the sesame sauce was just too thick for me to coat the dish evenly with the sauce. Sunomo was average.

Yam tempura was standard so nothing much to comment. The moment I saw the plate of sashimi being passed around the table, I knew the quality of this place has really gone downhill. It was bland, super chewy, and not properly prepared.

Our group got a bunch of nigiri to sample from alburi salmon, tuna, mackerel, etc. Their nigiri rice to fish ratio varied in different sizes.  I do not know how long they have been sitting in the back because the taste of them were off. The highlight of my meal was definitely the BBQ meat. I only stuck with beef and chicken that night. Since I sat at the end of the table, I definitely got the short end of the stick as some of the food items I ordered were not arrived on my side. Oh well. Didn’t bother making a big fuss about it because I just wanted to leave.

Our tabled tried to order their mango pudding for dessert but haha! of course, they were “out” of mango pudding.

Never again.
