‘Yuu Japanese Tapas’ is a casual, family-friendly Japanese restaurant located in the popular Continental Plaza in Richmond. The space has a very traditional Japanese feel to it with wooden fixtures and interesting décor plastered throughout the restaurant. Walking in at 2:30pm, the place was bustling with the late lunch crowd comprised of mostly young families.
They offer a wide selection of popular Japanese food on their menu. As I was flipping through the menu, everything looked very enticing. When I dine at places I’m not familiar with, I tend to observe what other people order from across the table as discreetly as possible 😛 Lots of people were ordering ramen to share, but since my boyfriend and I weren’t feeling that hungry- we settled for the Curry Chicken Cutlet on Rice ($10.95) and Poutine ($5.95) to share.
Poutine in Yuu’s Style ($5.95) This is their creative take on traditional poutine. The poutine is served on a small skillet topped with cheese curds, chopped nori (seaweed), bonito flakes, Japanese-mayo covered in a sweet-subtle curry sauce that’s reminiscent of gravy. The fries tasted just like the ones you get from KFC, which I’m not complaining because I like all types of French fries 😛
Curry Chicken Cutlet on Rice ($10.95). Portion was huge ! Not surprised that my boyfriend ordered this- he’s always in the mood for Japanese curry. The chicken katsu was crispy on the outside, juicy and moist on the inside. However, I wasn’t a big fan of the curry- the sauce was a little too salty for my liking. The dish itself is enough for two to share for a simple meal.
The curry came with a side salad as well. The salad was pretty basic with lettuce, corn, grape tomato, cucumber slice, and light sesame dressing. The dressing was nice and creamy and had just the right amount to go with the salad. Everything on this dish tasted fresh.
According to their website, they make their ramen broth from scratch daily- I guess I’ll have to come back to try!
