Maekhong Thai is a restaurant in Port Moody that emulates the idea of a “neighbourhood gem”. Nowadays, it’s difficult to find charming family-owned restaurants so genuine and authentic that make you want to bring back family and friends for any occasion just to support the business. The exterior of this place might make you think twice about entering, but don’t let it deter you away from this place because you might just be missing out on some excellent Thai cuisine.
The restaurant is located in a shared building in a neighbourhood zone on a slight hill. Arriving at 6pm, the place was relatively empty with a table or two occupied for an early dinner service. Interior of this place is slightly better than outside with some traditional, rather plain décor and clean space. I assure you that you’ll eventually forget about the ambiance when you start to dig in.
I started off with some Jasmine tea ($1.75) while my friend I waited for our food. The wait time was not too ridiculous, but it did take a while (15-20 minutes) for our curry and pad thai to arrive on the table.
Pad Thai ($10.95) + prawn (+$2) Rice noodles pan fried with choice of meat, egg, house special sauce, bean sprouts, green onion and carrot, sprinkled with roasted ground peanut. I thought the execution of the pad thai was really good. The noodles were perfectly cooked and had a nice chew to them. Ingredients were very generous and the taste had a good balance between tang, sweetness, and savoury. I would have preferred more sauce incorporated to get a good mix with the ingredients. I’m the type of person who likes to judge a Thai restaurant by their pad thai. If they execute it well, I usually feel pretty confident about the rest of the dishes that follow. 😛
Pineapple Curry with Prawn ($13.95) + Large Jasmine Rice ($3.50) Jumbo prawn cooked in red curry sauce with pineapple, tomato, onion cooked in coconut cream. There was a good balance of sweetness from the coconut milk for the spice level (mild). The addition of the pineapple added a sweet tang to the dish and ingredients again were plentiful..a lovely refreshing take on traditional Thai curry.
Large Jasmine Rice ($3.50) topped with preserved fried garlic. The photo looks a bit deceiving, but the bowl was huge! This could’ve easily fed 3 people enough for seconds. Rice was nice and aromatic.. tasted like it was mixed in with some coconut rice as well.
Overall food was impressive and I wouldn’t hesitate to bring anyone here if they were craving for some solid Thai food. Service was also very friendly and attentive. They also offer 15% discount for take out orders as well 🙂
