Ajisai Sushi Bar

Ajisai Sushi Bar is a place you have to arrive at really early if you don’t want to be waiting outside in the cold for a long period of time. Many locals swear by this place for their fresh selection of sashimi and authenticity. I was in the area so I decided to revisit this little gem on my own before jetting off to my actual dinner 😛

I knew I had a good shot of grabbing a seat right away because it was just ten minutes after opening (5pm). To my surprise , the place was already at about 80% occupancy! Ajisai has a pretty clean selection of sushi, nigiri, and sashimi to choose from on their menu. If you’re looking for cooked items, they do offer a limited selection of donburi, grilled fish, and common appetizers.

IMG_0892.JPGProbably one of the better complimentary green teas I’ve had from a Japanese restaurant.

IMG_0897.JPGChirashi Don ($15) Fresh selection of sashimi like salmon, tuna, hamachi, ika, ebi, tako, and tamago on a bed of rice. Sashimi was fresh and melt in your mouth tender. My favourites were the tuna and salmon. The tamago was also very light and had a hint of sweetness.

The rice was surprisingly memorable with toasted sesame seeds, minced shiitake, mushrooms and chopped seaweed. The extra touches brought the rice to another dimension and flavour. I really enjoyed how the combination came together.

The Uni Ikura had suberb flavour and texture. The saltiness of the salmon roe complimented the rich softness of the sea urchin. Quite an interesting combination that’s a rare scene in Vancouver. The price is a bit steep so it was definitely considered a luxury ordering it.

Chopped Scallop nigiri was pretty standard – nothing special

Toro nigiri was insanely fresh and melt-in-your-mouth tender! Mmm I could’ve easily downed 5 of them if I had the money to spend here. 😛

Be prepared to spend big money here as this place is not cheap but the quality speaks volumes.
