Beaucoup Bakery is a neighbourhood French-inspired bakery that serves fresh hot-out-of-the oven pastries run by acclaimed pastry chef and owner Jackie Ellis. Widely considered one of the ‘best’ bakeries in the city, this charming 16-seat bakery is best known for their delectable croissants. Beaucoup Bakery recently launched their holiday line up featuring chestnut pastries so I knew I had to make the trip here at least once!
My boyfriend and I arrived here on New Year’s Eve in the early afternoon and the place was bustling! Luckily we were able to grab two seats at the high countertops. The patrons there seemed to be enjoying their time catching up with friends and family despite the busy environment – it kind of reminded me of the coffee culture in Europe where people sip their coffee with ease while chatting the day away 🙂 Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I had to get going right away to catch a movie that day, otherwise I would have wanted to stay longer!
London Fog ($4.50) London fog is also known as earl grey tea latte. This was insanely delicious and comforting! It’s a winning combination of steeped earl grey, steamed milk, and vanilla syrup. All drinks come with a mini biscuit on the side.
Americano ($2.75) They ran out of drip coffee (sourced by 49th parallel) so the boyfriend went with their Americano. Boyfriend likes to add a bit of cream and sugar in his coffee and I thought it was pretty nice and smooth.
Chocolate Almond Croissant ($4.50) Boyfriend got the croissant to go with his cup of coffee. I’ve read from articles that the owner, Jackie, spent six months taste testing over 60 different types of doughs to get the right blend of ingredients. The exterior had a beautiful caramelization giving the croissant a crispy and flaky texture. First bite in revealed its delicate layers made from the intense lamination process. Overall, I thought the croissant was pretty good but my favourite one is still Chez Christophe’s version for both regular and double baked croissants!
Coffee Mont Blanc ($6.00) This is Beaucoup Bakery’s spinoff on traditional Mont Blanc with chestnut vermicelli, coffee crème chantilly on a crunchy meringue base with coffee streusel crumbs. A good dessert is never just sweet! I liked the contrast between the bitterness of the coffee and the natural sweetness of the chestnut. The texture of the meringue was spot on: crispy all the way through then melt-in-your-mouth.
Beaucoup is an amazing bakery with authentic French pastries which are definitely worth a try. Be patient with the seating space here, otherwise you’re better off grabbing their treats to go! Parking is also quite limited. Service here is really friendly and personable. One of the servers quickly cleaned up the countertop before our food and drinks arrived and checked up on us.
Bon Appétit 🙂
