There’s just something about coffee shops that make quality time with family and friends infinitely better than a regular sit-down restaurant.Whenever I’m due for a catch up session with friends, I almost always suggest going to a coffee shop. It’s a place where I feel safe to have long and meaningful conversations with people without having to feel rushed at all. And yes, I’m the type of person who likes to sit in coffee shops for hours chatting my day away like no tomorrow!
Moment Dessert House resides on the corner of Kingsway and Wilson Ave adjacent to the popular Bubble World Restaurant in Burnaby. Opened just roughly two months ago, Moment Dessert House specializes in a variety of popular Asian desserts. One thing to note is that they rotate their cakes on a daily basis, so whatever you see on their cake display is what they have for the day. In addition to their cakes, they also feature dessert soups like red bean and grass jelly. The catch is…it’s only available after 4pm. You pay at the counter first and they bring your food or drink to your table. If the place gets busy, you have the option of paying later.
Americano ($3.25) My Americano was surprisingly smooth and lacked any lingering bitterness. I would have preferred my drink to be piping hot though.
Green Tea Latte ($3.75) P commented that her drink was a little too sweet.
Caramel Macchiato ($3.75) V really enjoyed her caramel macchiato! She thought her drink had a good balance of the sweet caramel and espresso flavour.
Matcha Red Bean Chiffon Cake ($6.95) Chiffon cakes in general are very ‘light’ tasting cakes. My cake was soft, moist, and fluffy with thin layers of azuki (red bean) paste. The cake wasn’t overly sweet and the matcha flavour was light but distinctive enough for me to enjoy. The layers of red bean paste and cream were the perfect complement to the slight bitterness of the matcha. This cake definitely takes the top spot over Choco Coo‘s selection of matcha desserts!
Strawberry Chiffon Cake (6.95)
Service was really slow that day. Our barista was the only person manning both the front and back for a good two hours herself! Although we were the only ones there at the time, it took her a good 5-7 minutes per drink order. I believe she was recently hired with no prior experence since I caught her religiously reading the drinks recipe before proceeding to the next step! 😛
If you’re paying the bill later, make sure you remember! I had completely forgotten to pay for my bill at the front so I ended up getting chased after 🙄 It was quite embarrassing… The barista was just too busy doing my friend’s order that she advised me to pay later. I hope they work out their kinks and maybe hire extra staff to have someone manning the till at all times to prevent hiccups like this one!
