Nero Belgian Waffle Bar

It’s hard to come across places that are loved by both locals and tourists. And if waffles are your thing, then this is the perfect place is for you. Nero Belgian Waffle Bar is a popular waffle joint that recently expanded to a second location featuring both sweet and savoury waffles including an extensive drinks menu. It’s roughly three times bigger in size compared to their original location on Robson Street. My boyfriend and I made the trip out to their second location in Yaletown to check out the sweet and savoury additions that are exclusive to this location.

The place was pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon, the only seats available were their outdoor patio seats. We didn’t mind as the weather was nice anyway! It took a long time for our server to get to our table, but we eventually got his attention…

Americano ($3) First to arrive at our table was my Americano. It was probably the worst Americano I’ve ever insulted my mouth with. It was sour and had the most unpleasant aftertaste. I barely dented my cup before tapping out.

London Fog ($4) My boyfriend didn’t really have much to say about his drink. The tea flavour was weak. Could have been steeped longer. But that doesn’t also mean you bring my boyfriend’s drink ten minutes after my drink . At this point I was already feeling a bit upset with the service here.

Speculoos ($8.90) Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, speculoos cookie spread. You get to choose between liege or brussels waffle. My boyfriend opted for brussels since he likes the crispy and light texture of it. Overall, I thought the combination was pretty good but the waffles were a letdown. It was pretty flavourless and overwhelmingly crispy. I definitely prefer the brussels waffles at the Robson location much more.

di Parma ($11)Brussels waffle with prosciutto, fior’ di latte, pear, arugula, walnuts, blueberries, and balsamic reduction . I usually gravitate towards their sweet selection, but decided to go out of my comfort zone and opt for a savoury one. On the menu, the combination sounded delicious. You can’t go wrong with any of the dishes on the menu, right? Wrong. My waffle was extremely bland, the texture of my cheese was rubbery and tasteless , the prosciutto was low quality (similar to the cheap store bought ones from Superstore), and the blueberries lacked freshness.

Oh, and my waffle arrived ten minuets after my boyfriend’s waffle! How hard was it to throw the ingredients together when the only time consuming part of this component possible was making the waffle itself? 🙄 The table of two beside us ordered their food and drinks literally at the same time as us but received their drinks AND food simultaneously within a timely manner whereas ours came in staggered times. By the time I received my waffle, the couple beside us had already left.

Bob had warned me in advance about the service here and unfortunately my boyfriend and I were victims of the awful service, too. Although the atmosphere here is much better than their cramped location on Robson, the service here was unacceptable. Our food and drinks took forever to come, and the waiter even gave us the wrong bill which took even longer for us to leave. I guess I’ll be sticking to the Robson location from now on.

Avoid this place at all costs.
