Vancouver is home to the second largest Chinese population outside of China, right behind San Francisco. So you could say Asians like me are quite spoiled with the amount of options available when it comes to Chinese food. I can get pretty picky as not all options are top-notch. My longtime favourite place to go for solid Chinese food is Western Lake. Many locals are familiar with this restaurant as it is quite popular for dim sum any day of the week.
My family decided to have an early Mother’s Day celebration for my grandmother before her operation. A couple of my aunts flew in just for the occasion and they wanted to make it extra special and had asked me for recommendations. After researching and comparing restaurant menus back and forth, we all agreed that Western Lake seemed to have the best deal overall that fit within our budget. Reservations were made (of course!) in advance for our family- we got lucky because we didn’t expect the place to be so packed on a Wednesday evening!
Our party of 10 went with the Royal Seafood Banquet ($468) which consisted of the following:
Western Lake Appetizer Platter
Sautéed Scallops & Prawns with Seasonal Greens
Stuffed Crab Claws and Shrimp Paste
Crab Meat Braised with Shark Fin Soup
Lobster & Crab Braised in Superior Broth
Chinese Mushroom with Sea Cucumber in Oyster Sauce
Three Braised Squabs
Steamed Live Fish
Braised E-Fu Noodle in Abalone Sauce
Egg White Fried Rice with Dried Scallop
Dessert (Mung Bean Soup)
