Last week, I had dinner with my friend Patrick at one of his favourite go-to spots in the Lower Mainland: White Spot. With the influx of new and upcoming restaurants happening, we sometimes forget that Vancouver is home to many well known classic joints that serve up some of the best quality food around in the city. White Spot has been around for almost 85 years now and I’m sure many of you readers have stepped foot inside before for their legendary burgers, hearty breakfasts, or even stopped by for their signature desserts! We went on a weekday night and the place about 2/3 full with hungry patrons. Despite our early arrival, we still had to wait a bit for our table to be ready due to short staffing at the restaurant. A lot of them seem to be a lot older which we suspect that they are all full time staff here! Reservations are only available for parties of 8 or more (just so you’re aware).
As per Patrick’s recommendation, he insisted that I try White Spot’s take on the classic Chicken Pot Pie ($11.99).
The Chicken Pot Pie came with a side of The Spot’s salad with artisan greens, arugula , house vinaigrette, cranberries, sunflower seeds, and toasted almonds. The salad was refreshing and light with their housemade dressing. I didn’t care too much about the cranberries though.
Chicken Pot Pie with tender chicken in home-style broth with potato, carrot, celery, and peas baked with a flaky puff pastry served in a large casserole dish. The chicken pot pie was really delicious and the portion size was huge ! The puff pastry had a nice golden brown colour and was nice and buttery (the way I like it) and there was plenty to go around with my soup! Ingredients were plentiful and the consistency of the soup was thick but not too overwhelmingly chunky. There’s nothing like the pleasures of simple, delicious comfort food!
If you’re interested in making this dish at home, their recipe is available online here
Despite it being a weekday evening, service was extremely, extremely, slow. Everything from the menu, food, and bill took an extremely long time but Patrick and I had plenty to chat about that evening. Anyway there’s no doubt that White Spot is a classic institution within the city.
