Peaked Pies is an Australian bakery and it’s a must visit for locals and tourists alike. Traditional Australian pies are savoury with a type of meat filling served with gravy. At Peaked Pies, they make them from scratch daily offering a range of sweet and savoury pies as well as Australian coffee and desserts! Their flagship store is located in Whistler, but they recently opened one up on Denman Street in Vancouver downtown. Their specialty pie is the “Peaked Pie” which consists of any pie with mashed potato, a scoop of mushy peas and smothered in gravy.
I came here on a sunny afternoon with Bob and Barb for an early dinner. The ambiance is very inviting with wooden fixtures. It’s quite a modest space enough to seat about 20-30 patrons on any given day with a huge communal table right by the wall. The system here is very simple – you order up at the front and grab a seat.
Self serve counter is located right in the middle for water, cutlery, napkins, coffee fixings, etc.
My recommendation would be to always get your pies ‘peaked’ for the full experience!
Delicious display of pies
It’s quite the variety! Popular flavours are the “Traditional Aussie” and “Steak Bacon & Cheese”. The three of us decided to grab two pies to share since they were quite massive!
Chunky Steak and Mushroom ($7.95) + Peaked ($3.50) Chunky steak pieces in a brown mushroom sauce with gravy, mushy peas, and mashed potato. Bob really liked the idea of this combination so she ordered this in a heartbeat. The pie crust itself was fragrant, flaky, and perfectly buttery – solid crust overall. At Peaked Pies, they use short crust pastry on the bottom and puff pastry on top. The filling inside was rather bland and lacklustre. More seasoning could have been added to spice up the meat filling and give it more flavour. I couldn’t really taste any mushroom either. Getting the pie ‘peaked’ was definitely a good choice as the ingredients and textures melded very well together.
Traditional Aussie ($6.95) +Peaked (+$3.50) Ground beef, onions and gravy. Of course I had to go with their signature pie and get it peaked! If you’re looking for something more hearty and filling, again get it ‘peaked’ because you won’t regret it. Compared to the filling of the Steak and Mushroom, this one was definitely more flavourful and bold with a nice hint of onion spices. The flaky pastry encased the rich meaty filling very well and held together nicely. Every bite in was just as enjoyable as the first one! Another thing I love about their savoury pies is that you get more of the filling than the crust so you definitely get your money’s worth!
